How To Organize A Storage Unit In 5 Steps

Posted on: 29 January 2016

A storage unit can quickly become cluttered with the amount of items that you have in boxes. To avoid having the items thrown together in a chaotic way, you need to make sure that everything is organized. Organizing your storage unit is simple and can be done by following the instructions outlined below.

1 – Start by sweeping the area with a hard bristled broom to remove all the dirt and debris that has built up inside the unit. Take the time to sweep away the leaves or dirt that has built up around the garage door as it can prevent the door from forming a proper seal.

2 – Take all the items contained inside the storage unit and group them together in bins. Make sure that you keep similar items contained in the same bin, such as electronics in one bin and books in another. Make sure that each bin is covered with a separate lid that will keep the contents secure and prevent them from spilling out.

3 – Take the time to label each bin with a white sticker on the side and write a list of the contents on the sticker in black marker. The stickers will allow you to quickly reference what is contained within each bin without needing to open it. Also take the time to assign each bin a unique number and add that number to the sticker with the list of contents.

4 – Keep a master list of the bin numbers and a brief description of the content in each bin. Keep the master list on the inside of the storage unit right beside the door so you can quickly locate the list of bins, making it much easier to find the exact box that you want.

5 – Stack the bins neatly onto wooden skids a couple inches off the floor to prevent them from freezing or getting wet. Make sure that the heavier bins are on the bottom of the pile and the lighter bins are stacked on top with the stickers facing out so they can be seen from a distance.

Organizing the contents of your storage unit will help you keep things neat and tidy inside. If you have any questions about the size or how you can get a temperature-controlled storage unit, then you should contact a storage unit vendor like Colfax West Self Storage to discuss the available options.
